Four Things You Can Grow At Home

It’s National Farmer’s Day and it’s time to talk about growing your own food. There is an incredible way to become a farmer and that is with grocery store gardening. This is done when you take items purchased at the grocery store, plant the seeds, and wah-lah, garden. Here are our favorite four!

Pineapples

These are the hardest to get fruit from. Also, something that no one told me: It takes two years to grow ONE pineapple. If you’re up for the challenge, cut off the top of a pineapple, and scoop the fruit off of the skin. Cut a slice and expose the root buds, though don’t go too deep. Remove the bottom leaves revealing about an inch of the stalk. Let the top dry out for about a day. Choose a soil that drains well and plant your pineapple. You are going to want to secure a sunny spot for your pineapple plantings. Water twice a week in the beginning and cut down to once a week as the plant matures.

Sweet Potatoes

Cut your sweet potato into pieces and bury them in a pot under a shallow layer of dirt. You will begin to see growings and once they reach 4-6 inches in height, remove them from the potato piece and replant them separately.

Celery

Instead of throwing away the bottom of the celery stalk, place it in a glass cup with a little bit of water. In a couple of days, roots and leaves will form. Once you see this, grab a pot and bury the celery up to the leaves. You will see the celery stalks grow back and you can start cutting them for your cooking needs.

Green Onions

These are by far the easiest of all the grocery store finds to grow. Similar to the celery, when you cut the vegetable from the bulb, place it in clear glass with enough water to cover half the bulb. You will see these suckers sprout so quickly. You will have more green onion than you know what to do with. You can also transplant them into pots and you will get a month’s worth of green onion clippings.
